I am pretty happy w/John McCain's choice for VP. The candidate is staunchly conservative, pro-life through a real test of it, pro-gun, pro-energy, anti-corruption, has real world experience-not X no. years as lawyer practicing to be a politician- and still willing to fight Republicans while being one. All sorts of qualified I think.
Oh yeah, she's a woman, too. Is that an issue for anyone? Is it possible that was a deciding factor? Maybe, but I can hope that it was everyone's opinion that she was the most qualified. Ronald Reagan as governor of California picked a black man-I believe it was a man- for a fairly important position. Some black leaders met with him about it and asked if he had realized that the person would be first minority in that position. Reagan said-I paraphrase for lack of memory-"Oh, I just thought he was the most qualified."
I am definitely not saying McCain or the Republicans are the end all and never to be doubted. However, there have been a heck a lot of minorities put in prominent positions that are ignored media-wise because of their party despite how historic it would otherwise be. Then Republicans are offhandedly called racist. :P
That's my two bits.
(By the way, you will notice that I use the term "black" instead of African-American. I work with black people. When I feel comfortable asking a personal question, I ask them which term they prefer. I have found more than a few prefer "black."
My step-Grandmother was also a Catawba Indian. She called herself and indian, not Native-American.
Political correctness just makes people think way more than they need when talking to each other.)

I dunno much about her... It certainly looks like McCain chose her at least partly, if not mostly for her gender, which was a fool play if that's indeed the way it is.
Palin's 17 year old daughter being pregnant is certainly a tragic/funny thing to develope so soon.
One thing though... The VP seat is not just a throw away postition existing only to add "gravitas" or flavor or whatever to the presidential ticket. Right about now I am wishing GW had picked a VP who intended to run for president...
I am already hating the media when it comes to Sara Palin. They referred to her feminists group "Feminists for Life" as a "faux feminists" group that pretends to be "pro woman" just because they are pro-life. Why can't I be a pro-life feminist? Is being pro-child also anti-woman? Grrrrrrr.......
i will weigh in an say that i don't know jack anything about this woman, and i don't believe hardly anything from the media/news morons. anybody know any good websites where i can read up on her?

The pregnancy issue is ironic. At the same time, they came clean with it quick, it quashed the claim that her son w/Down syndrome was really her daughters and abortion, evidently, was never an option there either. (Let's contrast that to how well the media covered John Edward's affair.)
Ah but the VP position is very political. Reagan evidently eviscerated Bush I in the primaries, but picked him as VP, probably to reconcile the party. For the longest time, the candidates tried to pick someone from the opposite geographic region to pick up those votes.
Yes, it would have been better if GW had picked a possible president for VP, at least for the 2nd term if nothing else.
All of it can make your head spin, so you do the best with what you have and work for better next time. (shrug)

Does anyone really take the media seriously anymore anyway? I actually like that the media is biased... I think there was alot to be said for frontier journalism, when the news came with an obvious opinion attached, and no pretending otherwise. Sorting out the fact from opinion is a good excerise in learning to think. Alot of people need the excerise.
Speaking of how insane you would have to be to take the media at face value,(and how long its been thatway) does anyone know who Time magazine chose for Man of the Year in 1938?

Sarah Palin is truly incredible! I've been following her for about nine or ten months. I am incredibly impressed. I came across her because I'm a member of "Feminists for Life".
She could truly lead this country if the need arose. She's a lot like McCain in that established politians do not intimidate her. She took on both the Dems and the Pubs in Alaska. She rooted out corruption regardless of political affilation.
She's the kind of woman I admire & look up to. She's the kind of lady that I want my future daughter to emulate.
She was a gutsy & bold move that I think gives McCain an actual chance to beat "Hitler Junior".
Oh, I have to say, that at Dragon Con this weekend, there was a sea of Obama "Superman" shirts...which I actually found funny, but the crazy thing is that people really believe this about him. (There was also a great "I'm With Illogical --->" t-shirt. I'm going to see if I can find one like it for myself!) As for the lady McCain chose for vp, I don't know much about her, but what I hear is really pretty good. And anyway, who's job is it to criticize her for living what she believes and allowing her daughter to keep her child? I wonder how many other politicians (Dems or Pubs) hid unwanted pregnancies in their own children by taking the easy way out and killing them (even if they claimed to be pro life)? Good for her! The thing I worry about though is her Down's Syndrome son. She's going to be very busy, will she have the time to give him the attention and care he needs? (I know they'll have the dough to have someone care for him, but she needs to be there for him too.)
Mary, I just checked out the Dragon Con web site. Wow, it puts Gencon to shame costume-wise.
Is there a particular reason that you go to that con? I go to Gencon for D & D, for instance.
I'd say, Mary, that she'll be less busy as VP than as governor of Alaska. That state has to be ran differently than the rest. It's akin to it's own country. Her husband has stepped in and taken care of family responsibilities.
Oh, I went to Dragon Con because my SIL and her family like to go and dress-up. They asked us to come watch the parade because they were going to be in it. And Dragon Con is the largest Con in the world, so there are a LOT of people who like to see and be seen there.
DC- You have a great point about VP vs. Gov. I also understand that she has done an incredible job as Gov. of Alaska. And I also want to make sure you all know that I think it's amazing that she has been able to do what she has - especially with all the extra family demands going on at home.
Yeah, T-dog, Hitler it was.
A side note: my dad said that Palin is good enough to make him vote for McCain, then hope he bites it when he gets into office. (Ok, he really doesn't WANT him to die, but if he should happen to, he thinks we'd have an awesome president.)
